Some thoughts about our relationship with media

Well... I have some thoughts on stuff that are kind of hard to put into words, mainly about the way people seem to interact with media these days. I want to preface this by admitting that I too am guilty of doing some of the things I complain about!

It feels incredibly cliche to repeat it, but everyone is a critic now. This is not inherently a problem; it's great that people can share their opinions on things and I love doing so, but I wonder if we're approaching works with an increasingly cynical or combative attitude that is becoming detrimental to our enjoyment of them. This is not to say that one shouldn't think critically, but do we really have to treat time that is ultimately for recreation as some kind of quest to find the next best thing? I blame social media and the internet! (Surprise!)

Maybe this is going on a bit of a tangent but this is kind of relevant, there seems to be a growing obsession with the categorisation of content that we consume. I point to the recent proliferation of all these "wrapped" things that sum up one's annual intake of xyz. I think this can be interesting, but I think it's also setting us up for an awful way to interact with human creativity by reducing many peoples' effort into a bunch of numbers! I hear more and more people say something along the lines of "Oh I only watched/read this many things last year, I need to watch/read more next year". Am I crazy in thinking that this is a bad mindset? Surely it would be better if one organically came across works, dipped their toes in, then decided whether to give it a go because they want to, rather than to treat it as a chore and do so begrudgingly which is no doubt going to result in negative feelings afterwards. I think watching a million films for the sake of watching a million films would make anyone hate every single one of them, as opposed to watching a handful that looked interesting. As mentioned beforehand I think that social media has been a detriment in this regard as the people who watch/read a million things a year have to pick out every single problem with a work so that they can place them in neat little boxes and make ranking lists and so on. I was 100% guilty of this when it came to anime, and so recently decided to score anime on the Anilist website using the :) :/ or :( faces, it feels so much better than spending time picking shows apart any more than necessary just so that I could find the difference between a 3/10 and a 4/10!

Do I expect people to read this and change their habits? Of course not, I just like to complain about things and didn't feel like verbally dumping this trail of thought on any of my friends XD. I do like to think that my "just chill out" approach to these kind of things is a realistic solution though. I'm writing this past my bedtime so maybe I'll expand on it another time.
